Parents, please introduce yourselves to and welcome your new Peoria Heights Grade School teachers this year who will be working working with your students! PHGS teachers and parents share a common goal of providing for the educational and welfare needs of their children. Establishing a productive and positive working relationship between the teacher and parents will assist your child in achieving and maturing to enjoy the process of learning. We encourage your comments and welcome your support as we work together with you this year at your Peoria Heights Grade School!
Please help us maintain building security. We ask that all parents visiting PHGS first check into the school office, where, if needed, we will call your child to the office to see you. We want to limit visits to classrooms by as many as possible to reduce the number of daily distractions to the teachers’ work with students. PLEASE, DO NOT GO DIRECTLY TO A CLASSROOM TO VISIT A CHILD DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. Stop in the office and we will call your child to you there from the classroom. Parents who interrupt classes will not be allowed to see children at the classroom, and will be asked to return to the school office for assistance. Thanks for your help in making student instructional time most productive for students!
Peoria Heights Grade School is very proud of all the students who work with Mr. Hawkins representing their fellow students as members of “Student Council”. Council members volunteer their time and efforts to benefit many worthy community causes and projects. These students are future civic leaders who are conscientious and caring. This year’s Student Council Membership includes:
Austin Shinn Courtney Michael Gwen Clayton John Moore
Shelby Lowery Jimmie Walden Ashley Dalton Vianca Montesdeoca
Andrea Wright Amber Phillips Zach Griffith Ally LaHood
Lindsey Avena Isaac Johnston Jesse Lynch Brittany Morgan
Larissa Baize John Clancy
Good luck students with all your Student Council projects this 2008-2009 school year!
Drivers visiting our school will surely notice the new, yellow curbed, NO PARKING areas indicated around our school drive. NO PARKING areas are designated to protect student pedestrian traffic around PHGS, to facilitate bus transportation of students, and to discourage traffic accidents where parked vehicles may be struck by others. Stopping momentarily in these NO PARKING areas to pick up or drop off a student is permitted, but vehicles should never be parked and left unattended against a yellow curb. If leaving your vehicle, always park in a lined parking space before entering PHGS. Illegally parked vehicles are subject to being ticketed by the PHPD, as they are if parked illegally anywhere in Peoria Heights. Please help us protect the safety and welfare of all PHGS students by observing NO PARKING areas marked in yellow!
A reminder also to all parents and drivers of vehicles on school property, that in crosswalk areas, students and pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way, requiring vehicles too STOP to yield to walkers in the crosswalk. We have an order places for signs that will be placed at all crosswalks to remind drivers that they must ALWAYS yield to walkers. During the morning and afternoon hours when large numbers of pedestrians are walking on school property, ALL DRIVERS MUST BE PATIENT AND YIELD TO WALKERS TO ENSURE STUDENT SAFETY. Children, by nature, are irresponsible at times, and drivers of vehicles must be extra cautious and drive VERY SLOW on school grounds. We appreciate your efforts to protect all students at PHGS.
It’s a big year with a big Presidential Election election showing opposing parties neck in neck in the polls with both Obama and McCain now holding about 47% of the voters. Who will win? Mr. Hawkins has signed PHGS students up to participate in the “Illinois Student Vote Mock Election”. The week of October 6th, Student Council members will be registering students to vote in their classrooms, with our Mock Election taking place on October 28th. Our building Presidential Election winner will then be announced. It will be interesting to see if Heights student voters reflect the choice of the nation’s voters on election day. Thanks to Student Council members and Mr. Hawkins for their efforts to involve all PHGS students in an American tradition our ancestors have fought to protect - the right of American citizens to vote in a free election to select those who will represent and govern our nation and her people!
Fire Drills here at Peoria Heights Grade School give our students and teachers the opportunity to practice escape plans that we have and will use in a building fire emergency. Each year, our students participate in a minimum of three fire drills, plus an annual tornado drill, plus a school “lock down “ drill. We congratulate our students who do such an excellent job for us in remaining calm and exiting the building in a quiet, calm, orderly, and quick fashion. Do you have a fire escape plan at your home that everyone has practiced and is familiar with? If not, you should consider planning for such an emergency now, in case that feared emergency, becomes a reality at some later time.
If your student participates in athletics and would like to purchase a lock for locker room use at or away from our school while competing, please see Mr. Beltz in the school office. We have combination locks available for student purchase at $3.50 each (our cost). Our locks may be opened by key by school officials if the combination is forgotten. This provides student security of private possessions, and gives the school immediate access to lockers to ensure student safety. The locks are student property and may be used by students during their tenure here at PHGS, with all locks taken home at the end of the school day and returned to each practice for use. Protect your student’s possessions from pilfering or theft here or away from our school, by purchasing a security lock today!
Hats off to the Peoria Height Police Department for their efforts in securing the speed reminder sign that is located on Glen Avenue near the school entrance. Cars on Glen see their traveling speed shown in large numbers as they approach the sign just as they enter the posted 20 MPH School Zone. The sign is an important reminder to all traffic on Glen that posted speeds are important to follow to protect student safety. Heights Police intend to enforce the posted speeds so use caution and be aware that a vehicle driven in an unsafe manner can become a weapon in a tragedy!

Thirty students are going to be meeting with Mr. Eggert Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week beginning August 27th. Students are giving up some of their free time outside of classes to help build choir and nurture their own interest in vocal music. Thanks to all the students who have shown an interest. We look forward to your concerts here at PHGS!
Parents of Bright Futures and Kindergarten children, Grade 2 (Dental), Grade 6 (Dental & Physical). and parents of any children new to our school district, are asked to get physical and dental exam forms to us as soon as possible. State law requires these forms and proof of immunization, including 2 measles shots, and hepatitis immunizations, and a diabetes screening (new requirement in 2005), on file for all students, by October 15th!. New this year is a state requirement for ALL STUDENTS in Grades K. or coming into our school district a a new student must show proof of having received a vision examination by a licensed physician or optometrist. (New requirement in 2008) The state also requires students in K, 2, and 6 to Have a dental exam. Students entering Preschool programs or Kindergarten must also have proof of immunization against Chicken Pox, a state requirement effective school year 2002-2003. Thanks for your help!
Students walking down Glen Avenue are reminded to stay on sidewalks at all times, and to cross Glen to enter school property only at the school crosswalk. Older students are also asked to help keep an eye on the younger children walking to and from school. Students are also required to cross all roadways on school property in the yellow painted crosswalk areas. We ask all parents driving vehicles to be extra cautious of children walking on school property at all times!
Have you paid student registration and textbook fees for your student for this school year? Each year our schools lose hundreds of dollars in funds that could be used to benefit our students, because some parents never pay these fees. The fee is $60.00 for students in grades K - 8. Please pay these fees as soon as possible if you haven’t already done so. If you already have, THANK YOU for attending to this responsibility so quickly!

We require that Peoria Heights Grade School “Walk In and Drop Off” students arrive on school grounds each day no sooner than 15 minutes before the start of school. (That’s 8:30 A.M. on regular school days, please!) Adult supervision of children outside is not available until that time. Students arriving too early are prone to be injured, to become involved in fights, be playing in the traffic, etc. Please monitor your child’s departure time from home. Early student arrivals have been a cause of injuries, fights, and school suspensions. Please don’t allow your child to arrive at school too early. Thanks to all the parents who help us with this important matter that helps safeguard the safety and welfare of all PHGS children! We appreciate your efforts!
Don’t forget, that Monday, September 1st, Labor Day, is a holiday with no school in session! Make plans now to enjoy your three day weekend!
