2008 Scholastic Bowl Summary

PHHS won the Prairieland Conference with a 21-3 record, was the IHSA Regional champion, won the Peoria County and Galesburg Rotary tournaments, was the consolation champion at both the Masonic Regional and at Orion, and was tied for third in the twenty-member Peoria Area League with a 12-3 record.  The varsity team competed in 111 contests on 23 (18 IHSA) dates with a final record of 79-22 (85-26 if the “B” team results were included).  The varsity school record is now 817-425 in the 22 years of competition.  For the third time a number of PHHS students participated in a Solo Tournament at the U of I and for the first time took part in a NAQT.

Team leaders in toss-ups were seniors Zack Troxel with 233 (368 career) followed closely by Greg Gauf with 218 (360 career).  Junior and captain Burl Rolett answered 153 (252 career to date).  Senior Justin Hayse answered 109 (180 career) followed by seniors  Sam Boles with 45 (56 career), Nikki Markovich with 42 (53 career), and Julio Soto with 33 (50 career).  A total of 873 toss-ups were answered for a 7.9 per quiz average. 

A pin in lieu of a third varsity letter was awarded to Greg Gauf.  Pins in recognition of second varsity letters were awarded to Burl Rolett, Julio Soto, and Zack Troxel.  Varsity letters were awarded to seniors Sam Boles, Justin Hayse, and Nicole Markovich.  Pins for second junior varsity letters were awarded to Eric Markovich, Sam Mathews, and Alex Tiethoff with JV letters to Jesse Barber, Andy Mulholland, and Jacob Runyon.  Frosh-soph participation certificates were awarded to JJ Backus, KeJuan Jones, and  Kyle McDaniel.  Willow Crane also participated at the varsity level answering 12 questions and Jake Kepler and Samantha Wilson took part at the JV level.

 Justin Hayse and Zack Troxel earned all-tournament recognition at the Peoria County Tournament.  Zack Troxel, Greg Gauf, and Burl Rolett earned spots on the All-Conference Team.  Greg was seventh in the PAL.   Zack , Greg, and Burl  received all-sectional recognition.  Justin Hayse, Greg Gauf, Burl Rolett, and Zack Troxel earned One Hundred Point Club plaque recognition.   The team won IHSA Team Academic Award recognition for the seventh year in a row and Greg Gauf, Justin Hayse, Nicole Markovich, Burl Rolett, and Julio Soto earned individual IHSA Academic Scholar recognition.

The frosh-soph record was 24-18 on ten dates.   Sophomore Sam Mathews (122 toss-ups plus 13 varsity) shouldered the captain duties.  Sophomores Eric Markovich (41 and 5 varsity), Alex Tiethoff (16 plus 2 varsity), Jake Kepler (8), Jesse Barber (6 and 2 varsity), Samantha Wilson (4), and JJ Backus (2), plus freshmen Andy Mulholland (41and 2 varsity), Jacob Runyon (15 plus 4 varsity), and KeJuan Jones (1) also answered toss-ups.  The team answered 256 questions for a  6.1  per quiz average.  The team was second at the Peoria Christian tournament and third in the conference.   Sam Mathews was the fourth member of the Peoria Area all-league team.  Mrs. Marilyn Sidle was the frosh-soph coach.

Thanks to all the parents, staff, and non-scholastic bowl students who helped make this a successful, fun, and learning year.   

Prairieland Conference Results

The Peoria Heights High School scholastic bowl team won the Prairieland Conference championship with a 21-3 record.  Lewistown was second with an 18-6 record and Brimfield third with a 15-9 record.  Other schools in the conference include Abingdon, Astoria, Bushnell-Prairie City, Cuba, Elmwood, and Havana.  The conference season was held over seven dates with several contests each evening.  The last meet was Thursday 28 February at Cuba.  All-conference medallion winner was Mark Kline (12) of Lewistown with 68 toss-up questions answered.  Zack Troxel (12) of Peoria Heights and Kyle Dinges (12) of Abingdon were tied for second with 43 answers.  Tied for fourth answering 38 toss-up questions were Greg Gauf (12) of Peoria Heights and Robert Stockham (12) of Havana.  In sixth place was Emo Vera (9) of Bushnell-Prairie City with 37 followed by Burl Rolett (11) of Peoria Heights in seventh place with 35.  Jacob Crosetto (10) of Astoria was eighth with 34 followed closely by Chase Morgan (12) of Havana  with 33.  Mary Harmon (12) of Brimfield answered 30 toss-up questions for tenth place with Melissa Baughman (12) of Cuba with 26 and Beth Boudreau (12) of Brimfield with 25 answers completing the all-conference.
