2007 Scholastic Bowl Summary

PHHS was second in the Prairieland Conference with a 16-5 record, , third at the Masonic, fourth of 20 at Orion, fifth at Aledo, and eighth in the twenty-member Peoria Area League with a 9-5 record.  The varsity team competed in 75 contests on 21 (18IHSA) dates with a final record of 46-29.  The varsity school record is now 738-403 in the 21 years of competition. 

 For the second time a number of PHHS students participated in a Solo Tournament at the U of I. 

Team leader in toss-ups was a tie between juniors Greg Gauf and  Zack Troxel both with 121.  Sophomore and captain Burl Rolett answered 96 plus 15 in one FS tournament.  Junior  Justin Hayse answered 71 followed by senior Ansel Wachter with 18 and junior Julio Soto with 17.   Juniors Sam Boles and Nikki Markovich answered 11, junior William Jenkins 5, and  junior Zack Lawrence 2.  A total of 475 toss-ups were answered for a 6.33 per quiz average. 

A pin in lieu of a second varsity letter was awarded to junior Greg Gauf.  Varsity letters were awarded to Burl Rolett, Julio Soto, Zack Troxel, and Ansel Wachter.  Varsity participation certificates go to juniors Sam Boles, William Jenkins, and Zack Lawrence.  Junior Varsity letters were awarded to Nikki Markovich, Eric Markovich, Sam Mathews, and Alex Tiethoff with  second year JV pins to Willow Crane and Justin Hayse.  Frosh-soph participation certificates were awarded to Jesse Barber and Cory Scribner.

 Zack Troxel earned all-tournament recognition at the Bloomington IHSSBCA Fall Tournament.  Zack Troxel, Greg Gauf, and Burl Rolett earned spots on the All-Conference Team.   Zack and Greg received all-sectional recognition.  Zack was honored with second team all-state selection.

Justin Hayse was awarded a Fifty Point Club plaque.  Greg Gauf, Burl Rolett, and Zack Troxel earned One Hundred Point Club plaque recognition.

The frosh-soph record was 19-16 on ten dates.   Sophomore Willow Crane (82) and Freshman Sam Mathews (42) shared captain duties.  Freshmen Eric Markovich (29), Alex Tiethoff (14), and Jesse Barber (6) also answered toss-ups.  The team answered 188 questions  for a  5.37  per quiz average.  The team was second at the Peoria Christian tournament and second in the conference.  Eric Markovich was 4th while Sam Mathews and Willow Crane tied for 9th on the FS Prairieland all-tournament team.  Willow Crane (fifth) and Burl Rolett (first) earned all-tournament recognition at Peoria Christian.   Mrs. Marilyn Sidle was the freshmen-sophomore coach.

Prairieland Conference Results

The Peoria Heights High School scholastic bowl team placed second in the Prairieland Conference championship with a 16-5 record.  Conference members include first place Lewistown at 19-2, Elmwood, Havana, Bushnell, Cuba, Abingdon, and Astoria.   PHHS has been conference champion nine of the past twelve years plus two seconds and a third.   The conference contests are held over seven dates with three quizzes each evening.

All-conference medallions were awarded to Alex Davis (12) of Elmwood with 92 toss-ups answered, Hannah Kline (12) of Lewistown with 57, Mark Kline (11) of Lewistown with 48, Tyler McGrew (12) of BPC with 40, Zack Troxel (11) of PHHS with 39, Greg Gauf (11) of PHHS with 34, Melissa Baughman (11) of Cuba with 34, Kyle Dinges (11) of Abingdon and Dustin  Smith  (11) of Havana tied with 31, and Burl Rolett (10) of PHHS with 28.    Other Heights students answering conference questions included Sam Boles (11) with 2, Justin Hayse (11) with 16, Nikki Markovich (11) with 3, and Julio Soto (11) with 2.  The 124 tos-ups PHHS answered was tops with conference champion answering 116.
