2005 Scholastic Bowl Summary

The varsity team competed in 77 contests on 20 dates with a final record of 58-19 in the five month season from October to March.  PHHS was first in the Prairieland Conference with a 20-1 record, third in the West Division of the Peoria Area League with a 6-3 record, first at the 16 team Dunlap Masonic regional, and first at the 24 team Aledo Tournament.  The varsity school record is now 619-361 in the 19 years of competition.

Memorable contests included defeating IMSA by five points in the Masonic State competition and defeating Lewistown in conference play two out of three times including one the last question, and defeating both Aledo and Geneseo on the last toss-ups for the first championship at Aledo.  Pez candies were again  devoured.

Team leader in toss-ups was junior Dylan Troxel with  368 toss-up questions answered.  Juniors Jeff Schwindenhammer with 60,  Hal Woo with 56, Greg Chamberlain with 31, and  Mike Casey with 15 were followed by junior Mike Hill with 7, senior Amanda Chamberlain with 4 plus 2 JV, and Zack Troxel with 3.  Junior Marc McCarty and freshmen Justin Hayse and Greg Gauf also competed in varsity matches.  A total of 544 toss-ups were answered for a 7.1 per quiz average.  The IHSA Team Academic Achievement Award was earned for having better than a 3.0 team GPA.

The frosh-soph record was 14-21 (14-27 counting team two) on ten  dates.   Freshman Justin Hayse served as captain and answered 52 toss-up questions.  Freshmen Greg Gauf answered 58 toss-ups, Zack Troxel 21, and sophomore Ansel Wachter 15.  Others answering included freshman Matt Wills with 9, Sam Boles with 8, William Jenkins with 6, and James Carter with 5 toss-ups.  Elizabeth Guerrero also competed.    The team answered 186 questions for a 4.5 per quiz average.  Mrs. Lyn Egle was the freshmen-sophomore  coach again this year.

Varsity letters were awarded to Mike Casey, Amanda Chamberlain, and Greg Chamberlain.  Varsity pins were awarded to Dylan Troxel for a third year letter and to Jeff Schwindenhammer and Hal Woo for second year letters.  Junior Varsity letters were awarded to freshmen Greg Gauf, Justin Hayse, Zack Troxel, and Matt Wills.  A JV pin was awarded to Ansel Wachter.  Participation certificates go to juniors Mike Hill and Marc McCarty and freshmen Sam Boles, James Carter, Elizabeth Guerrero, and William Jenkins.  Dylan Troxel received all-sectional and all-state  recognition.    He earned all-tournament recognition three times and  received a captain pin for being the varsity captain. 

Fifty point club plaques were awarded to Jeff Schwindenhammer and Hal Woo and a One Hundred Point Club plaque Dylan Troxel in recognition  of their answering of 60, 56, and 368 toss-up questions respectively.  Dylan now has 669 for his career, Hal 103, and Jeff 101.

Thanks to all the parents, staff, and non-scholastic bowl students who helped make this another successful, fun, and learning year.  

Prairieland Conference Results

The Peoria Heights High School scholastic bowl team placed first in the Prairieland Conference championship with a 20-1 record.  Conference members include second place Elmwood, plus Lewistown, Cuba, Astoria, Abingdon, Havana, and Bushnell.  This is the 8th year out of the last 10 that PHHS has been conference champion.   The conference contests were held over seven dates with three quizzes each evening.  All-conference medallions were awarded to Ben Sheets (11) of Lewistown with 115 toss-up questions answered, Dylan Troxel (11) of PHHS with 100, Dan Butler (12) of BPC with 53, Alex Davis (10) of Elmwood with 48, Cody Schisler (12) of Astoria with 42, Jonathon  Schreurs (12) of Elmwood with 39, Dustin  Smith of Havana (10) of Havana with 32, Tyler Rodeffer (11) of Abingdon with 32, Derek  Smith  (10) of Havana with 29, and Kyle Dinges (9) of Abingdon with 29.   Other Heights students answering conference questions included Jeff Schwindenhammer (11) with 20, Hal Woo (11) with 21, Greg Chamberlain (11) with 12, Michael Hill (11) with 5, and Amanda Chamberlain (12) and Mike Casey (11) with 3 toss-up questions answered.
