2001 Scholastic Bowl Summary

 

The Peoria-Heights High School scholastic bowl team won the Prairieland Conference championship with a 20-1 record.  Cuba was second with an 18-3 record followed by Havana at 16-5  then Lewistown, Abingdon, BPC, Astoria, and Elmwood.  This is the sixth year in a row Peoria-Heights has won the Prairieland Conference championship and the eleventh conference championship won since 1990.  The conference contests were held over seven dates with three quizzes each evening.   All conference medallions were awarded to Stephen Woo with 81, Ben Walbert with 44, and David Mast with 40.  Other Heights students answering  conference questions included  Cheryl Boles, Ian Munk, and Adam Wallenfang.

 

Peoria-Heights won the twenty-four team Princeville tournament, was second at the Peoria County tournament,  and third in the Peoria Area League East Division.  PHHS was fourth at the thirty-two team River City tournament, the 16 team Masonic Regional at Eureka, and the 20 team ICC Invitational.  The final record was 45-14.

 

Stephen Woo was awarded all-tournament honors at the County (second), Princeville (second), River City (third), and ICC (first), and Peoria Area (first).  Ben Walbert received all-tournament honors at the Princeville tournament (fifth).  David Mast, Ben Walbert, and Stephen Woo received all conference recognition.  Stephen won all conference recognition all four years.  

 

Team leader in toss-ups answered was senior and team captain Stephen Woo with 246 followed by senior Ben Walbert with 95 and senior David Mast with 61.  Woo again earns recognition with  the PHHS One Hundred Club and received a plaque.  David Mast and Ben Walbert earned Fifty Point Club recognition and received plaques.  David’s career total was 216 toss-ups.  Ben tallied 296.  Stephen’s four year total of 709 is the school record.  The school record is now 418 wins and 267 losses in the 15 years PHHS has competed in scholastic bowl.  Others answering  varsity questions include sophomore Adam Wallenfang with 34, junior Ian Munk with 6, and junior Cheryl Boles with 3.   

 

The final varsity record is 45-14.  The varsity team competed in eighteen contests in the six  months between October and March.  They answered 444 toss-up questions for a 7.5  per quiz average.  David Mast and Stephen Woo received 4th year varsity pins while Ben Walbert received a 3rd year pins.  Adam Wallenfang received a varsity letter.  Cheryl Boles and Ian Munk received third year junior varsity pins.  Stephen served as captain again this year.

  

The frosh-soph record was 8-20.   Junior Varsity letters were awarded to Samantha Black, Andrew Jackson, Noah Johnson, a freshman, and  two sophomores. Susan Woo received a second year pin.    Ashley Cranford, Kristin Dennis,  Darcy Ewing,  Justin Massey, and three freshmen also contributed.  The frosh-soph team answered 158 toss-up questions for a 5.7 average while competing in 28 quizzes on ten dates.  Susan, Andrew, and another all served as captain at various times.  Mrs. Lyn Egle was the F/S Coach.  Thanks to all the parents, staff, and non-scholastic bowl students who helped during the year.
