2000 Scholastic Bowl Summary

 

The Peoria Heights High School scholastic bowl team won the Prairieland Conference championship with a 19-2  record.  Havana, Abingdon, and Cuba were second with 13-8 records followed by Lewistown, Elmwood, BPC, and Astoria.  The conference contests were held over seven dates with three quizzes each evening.  This is the fifth year in a row Peoria Heights has won the Prairieland Conference championship and the tenth conference championship won since 1990.

 

All conference medallions were awarded to Stephen Woo (11) of Peoria Heights with 91 toss-up questions answered.  Katy Hardy (10) of Cuba  was second with 89.  Kevin Wendzel (12) of Abingdon was third with 75.  David Mast (11) answered 30 toss-up questions for the 11th spot while Ben Walbert (11) answered 26 for 13th during the conference season.   Other Heights students answering  included Rob Bunting, Ryan DeLong, Jeff Chase, David Lewis, and Ian Munk.

 

Peoria Heights won the varsity competition at its 12th  annual Casimir Pulaski Day tournament.  Other schools participating were Brimfield, Orion, and Princeville.  The team placed first at the twenty-four team Princeville tournament and third at the thirty-two team Aledo tournament.  PHHS was fourth at the thirty-two team River City tournament and first in the initial Peoria area fall league of four schools.

 

Stephen Woo was awarded all-tournament honors at the County, River City, and ICC tournaments.  Ben Walbert received all-tournament medallion at the Princeville tournament.  

 

Team leader in toss-ups answered was junior and team captain Stephen Woo with 249 followed by junior Ben Walbert with 103.  Both will join the PHHS One Hundred Club whose members include:

Others answering in double figures for the 1999-2000 season include junior David Mast with 83, seniors Jeff Chase with 35 and Rob Bunting with 20, and sophomore Ryan DeLong with 10.  Seniors David Lewis (2) and Melissa Cooper and sophomores Cheryl Boles, Jason Stevenor, and Ian Munk (2) and freshman Adam Wallenfang also participated in the conference season.

 

The final team record was 51-16.  The varsity team competed in 18 contests in the six months between October and March.  They answered 504 toss-up questions for a 7.5 per quiz average.  David Mast and Stephen Woo received 3rd year varsity pins while Jeff Chase and Ben Walbert received 2nd year pins.  Rob Bunting received a varsity letter.  Melissa Cooper and David Lewis also participated at the varsity level. 

 

The frosh-soph record was 9-23.  Cheryl Boles, Ryan DeLong, and Ian Munk received second year pins.  Shana Agee, Adam Wallenfang, and Susan Woo received junior varsity letters.  Darcy Ewing, Amanda Ross, Jered Reinersman, Jason Stevenor, and Nick Welsch also contributed.  The frosh-soph team answered 231 toss-up questions for a 7.2 average while competing in 32 quizzes on eight dates.  Cheryl, Ryan, and Ian all served as captain at various times.  Mrs. Lyn Egle was the F/S Coach.  Thanks to all the parents, staff, and non-scholastic bowl students who helped during the year.
