1998 Scholastic Bowl Summary

 

The Peoria Heights High School scholastic bowl team won the Prairieland Conference championship with a 20-1 record.  The only loss was to Cuba on the last night.  Cuba and Havana were tied for second with 15-6 records.  The other schools include Abingdon, Elmwood, Lewistown, Bushnell-Prairie City and Astoria.  This is the third year Heights has won the Prairieland Conference title. 

 

All conference medallions were awarded to Nathan Pauli (12) of Peoria Heights with 86 toss-up questions answered.  Jason Bridges (12) of Elmwood was second with 64 questions.  Kirk Kittell (11) of Lewistown was third with 63.  Fourth was Doug Moore (12) of Cuba with 62.  Bill Behrends (11) of Havana answered 48 for fifth place followed by Gabe Estes (11) of Bushnell with 42.  Steve Emme (12) of Havana was seventh with 40 toss-up questions answered.  Stephen Woo (9) of Peoria Height and Al Hansen (12) of Havana were tied for eighth with 32, and Justin Funk (11) of Abindgon was tenth with 27 answers. 

 

Other Heights students competing in the varsity conference season included Nick Alvarado (11), Jeff Chase (10) with one answer, Melissa Cooper (10), Don DeLong (12) with 10 questions answered, Stefanie Karl (12) with 5, Cassie Lively (12) with 4, David Mast (9) with 7, Brian Redshaw (9), Gene Schafer (11) answereing 7, Crystey Switlik (9), and Ben Walbert (9) with 8 toss-up questions answered.

 

Four of the Prairieland Conference schools qualified for the IHSA Sectionals.  Havana won the Princeville Regional by defeating Dunlap.  Cuba also won their regional and Abingdon advanced with a second place finish in theirs.  Peoria Heights was runner-up to the hosts at the 10 team Illini Central Regional and advanced to the St. Bede Sectional where we defeated Cissna Park and University High before again being beaten by IC 274-135.  PHHS thus made it into the top 16 teams in the IHSA Class A state series. 

 

The final varsity record for the year was 40-19 with 18 quiz dates.  The FS record was 3-18 on six dates.  A total of 452 varsity toss-up questions were answered.  Varsity letters were awarded to Don DeLong (27), David Mast (16), and Stephen Woo (75 plus 49 FS).  Stephen set a school record for toss-ups answered as a freshman.  Pins for a second year varsity letter were earned by Stafanie Karl (14), Cassie Lively (19), and Nathan Pauli (271).  Nathan also received a captain pin.  Junior Varsity letters were awarded to Ben Walbert (12 plus 23 FS) and Brian Redshaw (5 FS) with pins for a second JV letter earned by Nick Alvarado (5), Gene Schafer (12), Jeff Chase (1 plus 23 FS).  Participation certificates were awarded to Crystey Switlik (4 FS), Jessica Gonzalez, Melissa Cooper, and David Lewis (2 FS). 

 

Nathan Pauli became a second time member of the 100 Point Club for answering at least 100 varsity questions during one season.  He received a plaque for this achievement.  Other members include:
